Are you tired of living asleep?

Do you remember that feeling as a teenager when your mom would wake you up for school? The feeling like you could sleep forever and it still wouldn’t be long enough? The pain of getting out of your warm bed and into the cold morning was almost unbearable. Showering, drying your hair, deciding what to wear, dressing yourself, eating breakfast, being on time – the work required to get ready for the day seemed almost endless. Similarly, in the religion of Islam, the earliest morning prayer (before dawn) is considered the most sacred. Beyond committing oneself to the communion to a higher force, it requires a specific degree of action, an action of consciously choosing to wake up from a sleep filled comfort and into the duty of devotion. This is often not a painless task. These incidents are similar to what one might experience on the path of awakening and living alive. Waking up from the safety of our numb sleepiness is uncomfortable. Choosing to let life in feels risky because life is full …

Conscious love

Love is easy, relationships are hard work. They take practice, communication, patience and commitment (to name just the very tip of the iceberg). I’ve found myself at the age where all of the sudden friends and siblings are getting married, having kids, buying houses (all beautiful things! Don’t get me wrong). Like anything else, through witnessing other peoples experiences, we start to question our own. As a young women with my partner for over 5 years we often feel societies expectations creeping in on us. Like we have something to prove to the world to assure people that we are committed, we are happy, we are in love. Little did I know how much of a gift this tension would prove to be for our growth. It’s forced us to have some really open and honest conversations about our future that may not have happened otherwise. Instead of being committed to fulfilling societies ideals, or committed to “monogamy” we want to be committed to each other and to our growth. There’s a big difference! So we’ve found …

emPOWERed

The total solar eclipse on Monday was such a special event. It was so unique to witness everyone outside with a sense of awe for this place that we all share.  It felt refreshing to have something that connects us (versus the theme of separation) as the main point of conversation between people, on the news and in our papers. On Monday, and the weeks leading up to it, my social media news feed seemed to be filled with posts, from people all over the world, on ways to harness this astrological event as a means for self reflection, transformation and collective enlightenment. Rituals, ceremonies, meditations, yoga classes, surya namaskars and pranayama techniques were just a few examples of topics that I saw floating around. Don’t get me wrong, I believe wholeheartedly in harnessing the energy that is invoked during times like this but I also believe that most are too quick to give away their power to some external event. It’s kind of like around New Years when everyone is setting intentions and questioning …

love and destiny

Hi beautiful people. I’m writing this from the floor of LAX. Literally, the floor! I’m bumming it for the night here waiting for my next flight in the morning. I think I started a trend in this little corner of the airport. People have been gathering and getting comfy for the night too, which makes me feel a little less crazy. The past few weeks have been full of setting stones. Life feels like that to me sometimes, times of comfort and planning and then times of execution and adventure. Both good, both needed. I write (and think) a lot about what it means to do what you love and follow your destiny. Now, that may seem like a daunting task but in reality it should be the most liberating, loveliest adventure of your life. The backbone of everything you do. The word destiny kinda freaks people out. It’s such a powerful word. I don’t believe anybody has a one word answer to what their destiny is. I think living your destiny is to be open in …

Ratatouille

Ok I know I always say this but seriously guys this is the easiest meal ever! I find myself falling back on the really simple yet delicious recipes lately. It’s nice to have some easy yet healthy dishes to fall back on this time of year when we are busy with the Holydays and spending quality time with loved ones. I love ratatouille because it’s easy to switch out vegetables depending on personal preference or with whatever you have on hand that day. Traditionally this is a warm-weather dish but to me its the perfect warm, red sauce kinda meal on a cold night. You will need the following: 1 jar of your favorite tomato sauce 1 large sweet onion 1 zucchini 1 eggplant 3/4 tomatoes (pick some nice vine-ripened red juicy ones) 1 tbs herbes de provence (simply organic brand) Salt, pepper & red pepper flakes to taste Splash of EVOO Directions: 1.Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly spread some olive oil in a baking dish. 2.Pour the sauce in the pan and smooth …

This I Promise

I write a lot. Sometimes I write and write and write and never share a word. Other times I write and share with this online community in which case I read it over and think to myself, hey maybe someone can relate to this. Once in a while I hesitate to share because maybe I’m the only one that feels this way? Maybe people think I’m sharing for attention or maybe they ask themselves, “who is she to share her story and think other people are interested?”. I realize these are MY fears and hesitations that in the end never really get a say in any final outcome but they are there. It’s a conscious decision to not let my fears and self-doubts get in the way of sharing in a way that is authentic. My point is, I think its important to have courage that whatever you’re going through, drawn towards, passionate about, fearful of, delighted by, others are too. Surely not everyone can relate or will be interested in what you have to …

The Practice of Gratitude

Ahhh Thanksgiving…everyones favorite holiday, even before Christmas which proves that yes, food trumps all. I love how we all collectively focus our energy on gratitude. In a culture that is bred on scarcity, fear and worthiness it is so refreshing to practice gratitude nationwide. Brene Brown says: “If the opposite of scarcity is enough, then practicing gratitude is how we acknowledge that there’s enough and that we’re enough.” I say practice gratitude because it really truly is a practice, as with most worthy things. The key is to not be too hard on ourselves when our first reaction isn’t the most gracious. I think it can be incredibly powerful to notice this and then consciously choose differently. If your the type to struggle with worthiness and have thoughts like: “who am I to be joyful” or “what about the starving children in the world?”. Remember that in honoring what you have you honor what others have lost or don’t have access to. I woke up this morning and had the most lovely conversation with Andrew about what we are …
